Typical productsAmong the various locally made products, we suggest visitors to the island taste the local honey, in particular, that made by the agricultural "Ballini" company. Ballini produces a variety of honey with flavours ranging from rosemary to eucalyptus. Besides being renowned for the superior quality of their honey, Ballini is known also for their specialisation in the reproduction of the queen bee, making them one of Europe’s most important manufactures in this particular field.
Not to be forgotten are the Elban sweets. Undisputedly, the most famous of these is the "Schiaccia Briaca" (drunken tort), prepared with pine nuts, saltanas and a locally produced sweet wine known as aleatico. Other popular local specialties include the "sciacciunta", which is a simple crusty tart, the "corollo", a cake made primarily with eggs and sugar and finally the "sportella", a traditional easter cake made with aniseed. |
